"A punk approach with the educated, refined mentality of a jazz quartet", states bassist Michael Renninger in describing the musical style of Darkroom. The introspective lyrics and in-your-face guitar sounds of lead vocalist/guitarist Paul Garvey, combined with the thunderous drumming of Ian Brumbaugh, the bluesy influences of guitarist Francis Fallon, and the deep, sinuous bass sounds of Michael Renninger merge into a diverse and aggressive fusion of alternative rock, punk, and jazz.
The group stems from four distinct musical backgrounds. Frontman Paul Garvey, who hails from Toronto, cut his teeth on punk and speed metal during his teens and early twenties - honing his songwriting and guitar-playing talents in the Toronto club scene. After moving to L.A. he met up with Brumbaugh, Fallon and Renninger - all formally trained musicians. Ian’s hard-hitting drumming style arose from his formidable experience in the L.A. club circuit and years of study. His playing encompasses a wide range of musical genres: from rock to jazz and beyond. Francis draws his influences from progessive rock, blues, and funk - combining them into a contemporary and unique sound. Michael is one of the only full-time fretless bass players in the L.A. club scene. His sound has been shaped by years of intensive funk, jazz, and latin study as well as through his pursuits into Afro-Cuban, Indian, and Aboriginal Australian musical traditions.
The combination results in a sound that is as unique as it is powerful. Live, all four musicians complement each other perfectly and create a sound that is distinctly and unmistakably their own.
