Founded in 1989, by Luis Calvo, Elefant Records was launched and
conceived of around "La Linea Del Arco" a music fanzine that Luis
conceived of, geared to review new music in the blossoming spanish rock
scene of the early 90's. Fifteen years later, Elefant Records
continues strong not only in the indie pop scene but breaks new ground
with an eclectic assortment of both spanish and english bands in the
bossa, spanish rock, and punk genres. To adapt to the ever changing
musical landscape Elefant spun off an "electronic" sub label in 1998,
home to notable artists such as Rinocerose, Wong, Prozack and HD
Substance. All the while elelfant's indie pop artists such THE POSIES,
LE MANS, UNION WIRELESS, LIGHTHOUSE, TREMBLING BLUE STARS, MARINE
RESEARCH, BMX BANDITS, and BIRDIE continue to bring critical acclaim
and attention to this eclectic label.
Elefant's electronic sublabel "Elefant Dance Recordings" known for
bands such as SPRING, LE MANS, and SILVANIA, broke new ground into the
electro clash scene with the 2000 release of "Runnin Riot" from the boy
girl duo known as "Mogul", which combines
Bubblegum-Electro-Techno-Punk-pop into catchy tunes like "Roll With It"
(a cover of Oasis's classic tune) and the club hit "Better Than Sex" as
remixed by the Cuban Boys. Subsequent dance releases on Elefant
weren’t limited to just bands from Elefant Records, but included
exclusive signings from acts such as RINOÇEROSE which went on to sign
with V2 Records.
1999 marked the tenth anniversary for Elefant. To celebrate it, the
label showcased its latest batch of spanish releases including music
from: VACACIONES, LA CASA AZUL, NIZA, LA PEQUEÑA SUIZA, GASCA, JUNIPER
MOON, and LES TRES BIEN ENSEMBLE, all young new bands that bring tons
of fresh air to the Spanish indie-dom, and to the rest of the world! So
if you're looking for some cool sounding indie pop, spanish, bossa,
rock, punk or electronic artists to give your project that special
extra touch, check out some music from elefant records.
