Rock legend, Gene Simmons, once described Joy the Bug as “close…but no
guitars.” Undeterred by the KISS bassist’s criticism -but amused by
his witticism- Joy the Bug vowed to remove “Love Gun” promptly from
their set list and to forge a path into the musical geography of
Southern California with their own brand of power-pop songs.
Word spread quickly of the band’s ambition, musical sincerity and
energy, and club owners, colleges, radio stations and anywhere else the
bug could get an audience opened their doors. At a most propitious
moment, one uncommonly loyal bug fan offered to transform her home into
a recording studio so that the bug might birth forth a disc. Band
members moved in; producers produced; chocolate-chicken was ordered and
eaten.
The result was “Many Mighty Massive Malls,” a striking debut that
landed on distributor “best-of” lists and earned the band a nomination
at the Los Angeles Music Awards for “Best Independent Pop Album.” A
distribution deal with FMA fueled many, mighty, massive club dates and
helped to grow an already large and loyal bug following.
From their humble beginnings playing to a living room full of
beautiful, college coeds in the seedy underbelly of La Canada,
California, to their inspiring club performances for doomed VH1 pilots,
“B” Movies, and yet more beautiful, college coeds, the creative forces
of Joy the Bug remain true to their vision of creating and performing
authentically good music. Go bug.
"Solid, passionate, smart and focused. A&R types beware; this band has
got huge potential." -- Album Network
