If you're looking for songs that capture the decadence of the Hollywood
"bubble gum" glam-rock scene, then "Mogul", a U.K based Boy-Girl duo is
your pick. Known just as "Jonnie" and "Candii", the duo on their debut
album "Running Riot", showcase a cool collection of bubblegum-day-glo
punk-techno-pop songs that are both flashy and cheeky at the same time.
The two, met at a disco while dancing to THE UNDERTONE'S ’“Teenage
kicks”. They soon found that they had a lot in common including a love
for cheap Casios and Speak and Spells, and soon "Mogul" was formed, to
serve as a conduit for brining back that cool euro-disco-electro-clash
sound.
Their debut hit single “Better than sex”, topped the U.K charts due in
part to the tunes catchy vocal and retro sound. A snippet of the song's
lyrics, gives you a glimpse into the band's cheeky side : “Even you can
understand, we’re not just another rock ‘n’ roll band, you’re so lucky
just to get one look, we’ll break your arms if you try to touch ...
we’re worth every penny we earn and yeah it goes on flashy clothes and
up my nose”. To give it a club appeal, the THE CUBAN BOYS, an
electronic music collective a la the "KLF" remixed the track,
resulting in "Better Than Sex" topping the U.K dance charts.
Once you've had a chance to hear MOGUL's songs you'll clearly
understand why the band is so hyperactive which translates into their
manic up-tempo songs. Due out soon will be a new album to be released
by Fortuna Pop. Till that moment comes, enjoy this collection of
bubblegum-techno-punk-pop tunes.
